Top NYC Songs: 40-31

40. New York City Girl - Modern Talking

Okay, this one is frivolous, energetic and contains a pounding dance beat. Visit a NYC club sometime and you’ll understand this song perfectly. And by the way, NYC girls are an exceptional combination of looks, attitude and sexuality.

39. New York Medley - Liza Minelli

Liza Minelli is one of those staples of NYC. And this song celebrates the city with a montage, including Sinatra’s classic. But it’s the lyrics: “New York, New York, so good they named it twice. New York, New York all the scandal and the vice. New York, New York, I love it!” that drive home the fact that this city, even with its vices, is irresistable.

38. An Englishman In New York - Sting

Here’s a quick question that’ll determine how New York you really are: When you walk through mid-town, what do you see more than anything else? Answer: tourists! If you said anything else, like skyscrapers, vendors, rats, rednecks … you’re still a tourist. But Sting is one damned cool tourist.

37. No Sleep Till Brooklyn - Beastie Boys

C’mon now. You don’t really think any list of NYC songs would be complete without this one, do you? There is a fun edge to Brooklyn that the Beasties really capture in this one.

36. I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City - Harry Nilsson

Yep. The Lord really is in NYC. I swear it. I saw him in the Times Square 42nd st. subway station.

35. Forty Second Street - Mel Tormé

And speaking of 42nd Street … now that it has been Disnyfied and dignified it has lost a bit of its charm. But leave it to Mr. Torme to give us a glimpse at the decadence that was once Times Square: “Where the underworld can meet the elite … 42nd street.”

34. Eyes of a New York Woman, The - B.J. Thomas

As I was saying about NYC women … there is even romance there, too. It must be that yearning for a personal connection in a city that can sometimes be so completely impersonal …

33. Sidewalks of New York - Mitch Miller; Mel Torme; Nat King Cole

This one was just too classic to leave off the list. It’s quirky and even a bit bizarre. But it’s such an ode to the streets of NYC that it’s more than worthy.

32. NYC - Annie OST

“NYC what is about you … you’re big, you’re loud, you’re tough … I can’t get enough … of cab drivers answering back in language far from pure.” Classic. And considering this one’s from Annie. It’s a lock.

31. I Love New York City - Andrew W.K.

Do you think Andy loves New York City? He was being a bit vague, don’t you think? For sheer enthusiasm this one rates as high as it does.
